About the Awards

Purpose

The Awards recognise excellence in how legal work is approached, delivered and achieved across New Zealand, reflecting the law not only as a technical discipline, but as a profession grounded in responsibility, stewardship and long-term impact.

They have been designed to:

  • recognise technical excellence, but not in isolation

  • focus on how work is thought through, structured and delivered

  • assess outcomes in the context of the challenge faced

  • reflect the role of the law in supporting clients, communities and future needs

The Legal Excellence Awards are not based on scale, profile or visibility, rather they recognise work that is thoughtful in its design, effective in its execution and strong in its outcome. 

Consistency

All entries are assessed on a consistent basis relative to their context, with judges directed to consider:

  • the nature and difficulty of the challenge

  • the clarity of the strategy adopted

  • the effectiveness of the approach taken

  • the outcome achieved relative to the circumstances

  • the contribution of the entrant

This ensures that different types of work can be assessed fairly, regardless of scale or profile.

All entries are assessed by an independent panel of judges. Judging is conducted impartially, with entries considered against the published criteria. Judges will declare and manage any conflicts of interest in relation to entries.

Entries should be supported by clear examples and evidence where appropriate.

Programme

The structure of the awards is designed to support clarity for entrants and consistency in judging across the profession. The programme is designed to recognise work across all parts of the profession, including regional and smaller practices.

  • Clear categories and entry pathways

  • Entry design focused on clarity over presentation

  • Open to individuals, teams and firms

Representative of the Profession

  • Includes all law firms irrespective of size

  • Open to private practice, in-house, barristers, legal executives and in-house legal business services professionals

  • Reflects both legal and operational roles

Fair and Comparable

  • Awards are not based on deal value, scale or profile

  • Entries are assessed relative to the challenge faced

  • Categories are structured to allow fair comparison across different contexts

Credible and Prestigious

  • A limited number of awards with clear structure

  • Independent judging and defined criteria

  • A programme that balances participation with recognition
